The Erskine Board of Trustees gathered on the Due West campus Thursday, Feb. 15, for its regularly scheduled meeting. “We are excited to be here at this time when we are preparing to celebrate the inauguration of Dr. Gustafson,” Board Chairman Sam James said. “The board is more unified than I have seen it in five years.”

Dr. Robert Gustafson will be inaugurated as 17th president of Erskine College and Theological Seminary Friday, Feb. 16, in a ceremony at the Due West ARP Church beginning at 10 a.m.

Highlights of the board meeting included the election of officers for the coming year, with Jill E. Gazzaway of Huntersville, N.C., to serve as chair, the first woman named to that position on the board. The Rev. Clint H. Davis, Chester, S.C., will serve as vice chair and Rex Casterline, Irmo, S.C., will serve as secretary.

Members of the board adopted a clarified statement on Christian higher education and will request that the Synod of the ARP Church adopt the statement at the meeting of Synod this summer.

The trustees heard reports in which they learned that the institution’s endowment shows continued growth; were told of increased undergraduate engagement, including participation in campus ministries and convocation opportunities; and were informed that morale is high in the seminary.

Provost of the Seminary Dr. Leslie Holmes spoke about a tour he and Dr. Dale Johnson will be leading in the United Kingdom and encouraged board members to consider signing up for the trip.

Following their meeting, the trustees, along with other members of the Erskine community, planned to enjoy a concert by “Duo Azul,” made up of pianists Amy Gustafson and Hyeyoung Song, to be offered at 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Gustafson is the daughter of Erskine President Dr. Robert Gustafson and his wife Marjorie Graham Gustafson. Trustees also plan to be on hand for Gustafson’s inauguration Friday.
