Homecoming 2012 celebrated with Family Day and Fall Fest

Erskine College students, alumni, families and friends joined to celebrate Homecoming 2012 as well as Family Day and Fall Fest Saturday, Oct. 27. A full complement of athletic competitions, musical performances, and other activities was highlighted by the crowning of senior Erin Gray of West Columbia as this year’s homecoming queen.
This year’s homecoming court was presented at halftime of the men’s soccer match against Queens University.
Homecoming princesses were Micheala Jackson, a freshman from Conyers, Ga.; Rachel Talbot, a sophomore from Rock Hill; and Cate Cardinale, a junior from Rock Hill. Second runner-up was senior Courtney Balcome of Middleton, Nova Scotia, Canada; and first runner-up was senior Myra Nicks of Hickory, N.C. Gray was crowned by last year’s queen, Taylor Wolfe.
The traditional float-building contest, “Fleet-O-Rama,” was held on Friday night on Robinson Field, with the senior class float named SGA division winner and the Athenian Literary Society float winning in the open division. Also on Friday night, the Choraleers presented their fall choral concert, directed by Dr. Mark Nabholz.
Faculty offices were open to welcome students and their families on Saturday morning and Sarah Kennerly ’65 offered “Stories by the Cabin” at the cabin across from Belk Hall. Meanwhile, inflatable games were set up on the Erskine Mall, a performance by Erskine’s instrumental ensemble, Sinfonia, was given on the Watkins Student Center porch, and the homecoming parade on Main Street preceded a cookout lunch on the Mall. The Parent Advisory Council hosted the annual Silent Auction, with proceeds designated to fund student life at Erskine.
Athletic activities during the day, in addition to men’s and women’s soccer matches against Queens University, included a women’s basketball exhibition game; a baseball intrasquad game; a volleyball game against King College; and a men’s basketball exhibition game.
Erskine musicians who took the stage on the Watkins Student Center porch at various times during the day included Sinfonia, the FCA Praise Band, the Fleetones, and the Erskine Gospel Choir.
Later in the evening two bands—”Prettier than Matt” and “Dustin Ashenfelder”— performed for Fall Fest.
