Men’s volleyball team and coach make history
Posted on May 4, 2016
Just as the men’s volleyball team created an exciting chapter in Erskine athletic history by heading to the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship Tournament for the second time in three years, Head Men’s Volleyball Coach Heather Vahjen made history as the first woman coach of a men’s volleyball team in the history of the NCAA tournament.
Vahjen also coaches the women’s volleyball team, which made it to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Semifinals in December. She had not realized she was the first woman head coach in the men’s tournament, and told Michael Christopher of the Greenwood Index Journal she was “shocked by it when they told me.”
Turning attention to the team, she said, “Not many young men can say they’ve been to the national championship two times in their career.”
The Flying Fleet lost to Long Beach State University 25-14, 27-25, and 25-20 in the tournament at Penn State University May 3.
