Four students got a second chance for service when they volunteered with RECESS, a program for adults with special needs that a larger Erskine group had worked with April 10 at the Special Olympics Spring Games in Greenville.

The students, who could not go to the Special Olympics because of schedule conflicts, traveled to Greenville April 30 with Visiting Assistant Professor of Physical Education Dan Corsi, who also arranged and led the previous trip.

Things didn’t turn out exactly as planned.

“They were scheduled to go to a horse farm for a ‘day on the farm,’” Corsi said. “Unfortunately, due to the threatening weather they canceled that trip. Instead, each of my four students had the opportunity to share their knowledge with the students of the RECESS group in the YMCA’s new fitness center.”

Lending a hand, indoors or outdoors, was the general idea, so the Erskine students put their physical education skills to good use.

Andrew Kozak, right, and other Erskine volunteers served as ‘personal trainers’ for RECESS in the YMCA fitness center.

“My students were personal trainers for the day and assisted students on completing a workout and learning proper technique,” Corsi said.

“They also were able to spend time with the [RECESS] students and staff during ‘share time,’” he added.

The students enjoyed a picnic lunch with the RECESS group before returning to Due West.

RECESS (Recreation, Exercise, Community, Education, Service, Social) is a program at the Greenville YMCA for adults with special needs who have finished high school and want to continue their education through community involvement, social development, and physical fitness.
