Warfield Lectures to be offered Oct. 18-19

Warfield Lectures are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 6:15 p.m. in Jackson Hall at First Presbyterian Church (FPC), Columbia S.C.; Thursday, Oct. 19, at 11:50 a.m. at The Bridge, Room 125, located at 1400 Lady Street; and Thursday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m., also at The Bridge, Room 125.

Presented by Erskine Theological Seminary and First Presbyterian Church, this year’s lectures will be given by Dr. W. Robert Godfrey, president emeritus and professor emeritus of church history at Westminster Seminary California.

Godfrey previously taught at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Stanford University, and Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He is a minister in the United Reformed Churches in North America and a Ligonier Ministries Teaching Fellow. His published works include Learning to Love the Psalms, An Unexpected Journey, Reformation Sketches, Pleasing God in Our Worship, God’s Pattern for Creation, and John Calvin: Pilgrim and Pastor. In 2010, a festschrift entitled “Always Reformed” was published in his honor.

Wednesday’s lecture, “How the Psalms Sanctify Us,” will be preceded by a supper at 5:15 p.m. ($5) and followed by a question-and-answer session at 7:15. The Thursday morning lecture, “The Pastoral Use of the Psalms,” will include a free lunch beginning at 11:45 a.m. and a question-and-answer period at 12:10 p.m. The Thursday evening lecture, “Luther and the Psalms,” will be preceded by heavy hors d’oeuvres at 5:15 p.m. and followed by a question-and-answer time beginning at 7 p.m.

The Warfield Lectures honor the memory of Benjamin Breckenridge Warfield (1851-1921), whom some consider the greatest English-speaking Reformed theologian of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
